Acrylic polymerization is a chemical process widely used in the textile industry. It takes place by vigorous agitation of a liquid inside special aluminium reactors. Different techniques can be used for polymer reactions, to obtain a polymer with specific physical and structural properties. Whatever the technique, polymerization involves mixing a liquid/solvent with the reagents through vertical agitators.
The most common application is for producing acrylic fibre, which is essential for the textile industry. Recently, however, acrylic polymerization is also used for producing polyacrylonitrile (PAN), a precursor to carbon fibres, which are used to reinforce composite materials due to their strength.
Polymerization of acrylics requires vigorous and continuous agitation, often necessitating high-powered agitators. However, power is not enough: as in any mixing process, it is essential to convert the mechanical power into fluid movement within the reactor or tank. The impeller does this task: at PRO-DO-MIX® we adopt two levels of impellers, usually of the 3PM-1084 type, specifically designed and tested for this purpose. In addition to experience, we employ an innovative approach: we rely on specialized professionals and advanced 3D design and simulation software, used in every project phase, to provide our customers with excellent and reliable agitators.
Safety is the priority in delicate processes such as polymerization: any dispersion of the gases contained within the reactor would be a danger and damage to the company. To eliminate this risk, PRO-DO-MIX® agitators have both single and double mechanical seals, with a shut-off system to allow maintenance operations in total safety. All agitators and instrumentation are ATEX-certified and can operate in explosion-hazard environments.
